ole miss
"Trying to enroll James Meredith, the University of Mississippi’s first African American student, a group of unseasoned Justice Department officials and 500 under-equipped U.S. marshals are pinned down by a 3,000-strong mob and must rely on their courage and camaraderie to survive the night and integrate the school."
It began as a fight for justice. It became a fight for their lives…
OLE MISS is a nail-biting historical drama -- think SELMA meets THE ALAMO -- about a pivotal, yet somewhat-obscure moment of the Civil Rights era when James Meredith forced the integration of the University of Mississippi at Oxford.
1962. The country is at a crossroads: The Supreme Court has struck down segregation, but the South stands defiant. Against this backdrop, the Kennedy administration and the Governor of Mississippi hatch a last-minute plan to enroll James Meredith as the first black student at Ole Miss. If they can pull it off, both sides get to save face politically and potentially avoid a bloodbath. Meredith is secretly escorted onto campus by members of the DOJ and 500 U.S. marshals. But when word of their arrival begins to spread, the marshals anxiously watch as a mob some 3,000-strong descends upon them! A riot erupts that lasts through the night, with the marshals doing everything they can to keep Meredith--and themselves--alive. By the time the Army comes to their rescue, two people will have died and hundreds more been injured--and the course of American history changed forever. OLE MISS is a Nicholl Fellowship Top 15% selection, a Stage 32’s Happy Writers contest quarterfinalist, and a Filmmatic Screenplay Awards finalist.
